The Little Boy and the Old Man
Take a look at this picture. What comes to mind immediately?
It is an old man and a little boy and they are conversing with each other.
A) In the poem The Little Boy and the Old man,we can clearly find how the boy tells the old man that he drops his spoon, wet his pants and cry very often. He also mentioned that the worse of all is that "The Grown-ups don't pay much attention to him"."I know what you mean!" the old man answered.
From this few lines of dialogues, the underlying message is shown very clearly - loneliness.
Both the little boy and the old man are all very lonely as the Grown-ups showed no signs to even care about them, they are too absorbed with their tight schedule.Grown-ups were also once children themselves and they might had felt loneliness before. However when they grew up,they do not care about their child and their parents. Although they knew they will grow old one day, they do not make an effort to spent time with them.
B) Shel Silverstein used dialogues and the choices of words in the poem to bring out the message in the poem more clearly. In the last sentence,"little old man" brings forward a powerful conclusion and tells us the underlying message.
