The Civil Rights Movement
A) The Civil Rights Movement began in 1955 and lasted till 1968
B) It is outlaw racial discrimination against African-Americans and restoring voting rights in Southern states.
C) One of the most significant events is about the Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks (the "mother of the Civil Rights Movement") refused to give up her seat on a public bus to make room for a white passenger and sparked riots between the blacks and the whites.
D) President John F .Kennedy
E) The African-Americans would have same rights as the whites.
F) The Civil Rights Movement is the same in the way that Atticus in TKAM, is protecting a negro slave who was allegedly charged of raping a white woman, which is like Atticus trying to outlaw racial discrimaination.
Montgomery Bus Boycott and Scottsboro Trials
A) Significance of Scottsboro Trials-
B) The Scottsboro Trials was about 9 African-American boys being accused of raping 2 white ladies on a train when it was in the tunnel. The trial of Tom Robinson in TKAM is also similar. Tom Robinson had been accused of raping a white woman. They are related as both of them are talking about how the people have a stereotyping mindset to those who have darker skins.
C) The trial of Tom Robinson took place in the 1930s same as the period which the Scottsboro trials took place. Both took place in Alabama. The two cases are also similar in the sense that
it begins with a charge of rape made by a white woman against an African American man
The poor white status of Mayella is a critical issue.
A central figure is Atticus, lawyer, legislator and member of the Alabama Bar, who defends an African American man.
The jury also ignores evidence, for example, that Tom has a useless left arm, similar as in the Scottsboro Trials.
Trials of a true Southern Belle and Southern Gentleman
A) What were the rules of etiquette for Southern Gentleman and ladies.
Gentleman
- A good manner is the best letter of recommendation among strangers. Civility, refinement and
gentleness are passports to hearts and homes, while awkwardness, coarseness and gruffness
are met with locked doors and closed hearts.
- Never scratch your head, pick your teeth, clean your nails, or worse of all, pick your nose in
company; all these things are disgusting. Spit as little as possible and never upon the floor.
- If you are going into the presence of ladies, beware of onions, spirits and tobacco.
- It is a great thing to be able to walk like a gentleman, that is, to get rid of that awkward,
lounging, swinging gate of a clown and stop before you reach the affected and flippant step of
the dandy. In short, nothing but being a gentleman can give you the air and step of one.
Ladies
- Graciously accept gentlemanly offers of assistance.
- Wear gloves on the street, at church and other formal occasions, except when eating or
drinking.
- When crossing the street, one must lift her dress a bit above the ankle while holding the folds
of her gown together in her right hand and drawing them toward the right. It was considered
vulgar to raise the dress with both hands as it would show too much ankle, but was tolerated
for a moment when the mud was very deep.
- When introduced to a man a lady never offers her hand, she merely bows politely and says,
“I am happy to make your acquaintance.”
B) What do Southern Ladies do to pass their time (hobbies etc)?
They love to read, drink tea and bake cakes and share with other people.
C) Pictures
Ladies
Gentleman
D) Atticus is a typical Southern Gentleman. His is highly respected and very responsible. His conduct and conversation throughout the book show that he is entirely free from the usual Maycomb faults of pride and racism and he always sets a good example for his children. Aunt Alexandra is the perfect Southern Lady who is a strong-willed woman with a fierce devotion to her family. Everything that she does is devoted to her family.
